[TOMT][SLOT MACHINE]Western style video and mechanical slot machine.
My grandparents use to own a slot machine where on the top there was a screen that would play a movie. The movie was animated in an anime style and it was about a cowboy going from town to town taking bounties and saving a girl. Below it there was a mechanical slot machine. It had the normal items like, bar, bar x2, bar x3 and the three sevens like most slot machines. What was different is that the jackpot symbol was in the shape of a bullseye. To start the slot machine you would grab the included fake coins and pop them in. You could put in as many as you wanted. To make the machine spin you would push up or down on the a small black lever. Then you would press 3 buttons to stop each window of the spinning slot machine. It wasn't a luck based slot machine but a skill based one. You could own match the items if they were straight across or diagonal from each other. If you unplugged the machine it would reset your progress and you could start the game from the beginning. It always started with an intro that shows you the character you are playing as and who your bounties are. When playing the machine you would watch the cowboy ride his horse. Every once in a while you get to do an event in the game. If you completed them successfully you would get a jackpot and progress to the next level. For example, the first level you arrive into a town looking for a bounty target. Once you got to the town awesome western music would play and you would have to fight bandits before getting to the bounty target. The only way to kill the bandits is if you lined up the the bars or 7's. Once you got to the bounty the only way to kill them was to get a jackpot, or lining up the bullseye. If you beat the bounty you will win a whole bunch of coins. If you fail, you see your screen break as if it was shot by a gun. Then it goes back to the cowboy riding on his horse. I think the last level was you see a train being robbed. While trying to get onto the train the bandits are shooting at you. If you successfully get on the train you can progress to the next level. In this level there are bandits hiding behind crates and again you have to line up the items on the slot machine window. Then towards the end you would see one of your bounties who is holding a woman hostage. Again you have to get a jackpot to kill the target and save the girl. When you do the game shows you riding off into the sunset with the girl and you win a huge amount of tokens. This slot machine was about the 3 feet tall and about 2 feet wide and about 2 feet thick. It was extremely heavy (especially for 10 year old). If you ran out of tokens you had to open the machine up with a key attached to the back on a chain. You would then take out a coin release bucket and place the tokens in it. The last time I played it was around 2010 before they sold it when they moved.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I present My Review of Destiny 3
Dateline: August 13, 2021
Against my better judgment, I'll put the TL;DR right up front here: TL;DR: Now that Destiny is being designed by BUNGiE's actual game designers - i.e., gamers at heart - instead of being defined by their marketing and finance departments, they're shipping a game that we're never going to want to stop playing, and we'll be dragging every one of our friends and their friends into playing it, buying them consoles with our own EIP cards along the way, if necessary. ------------------ (Note: I've been reading this in SkillUp voice, just for fun) I had the rare opportunity to play about 5 hours on a pre-release version Destiny 3 this past week. As the saying goes: This is my report. Right up front, let me say that although it may have been obvious to a few, it came as a huge shock to me to discover that the whole "MATTER" thing actually turned out to be this almost perfectly executed re-imagining of the Destiny universe, released a full YEAR sooner than anyone expected. Nice smoke screen. Well played, BUNGiE... well played, indeed! My hat is permanently off to Chris Barrett and his crew! Let me now count the ways in which Destiny has improved since BUNGiE made the decision to abandon the collection of industry fads, behavioral marketing gimmicks and band-aid fixes they've been using to keep their internal bean counters happy for the past 4 years, and finally get back to making A GREAT GAME. We can start pretty much anywhere, since almost every aspect of this new release is absolutely amazing. But let's start with the one thing everyone cares about:
Loot
All through the last two years of D2 you wanted a great Gnawing Hunger, right? Right?? It's been a staple in the game forever now. But a good one can be hard to find. Loot grinding in Destiny is a story all its own. Some players love it, some are sick to death of it. Either way, the fact is that in the past, except for a rare few stretches (lookin' at you, Chalice of Opulence), getting a specific item has always been left to the sole discretion of The RNGenie. And even though you may have finally found and placed an item in your Collections, it's mostly there just to taunt you, because... "menemenemenemeneh.. random rolls", making the whole Collections thing utterly useless for all practical purposes. D3's answer?
Golden Age Blueprints
One of the most interesting, key features of this new release comes from the discovery of Golden Age Blueprints - [a discovery you'll be instrumental in revealing, although at great personal cost, during the campaign] - which will replace your Collections in every way that matters. In D3, once you have procured the required Golden Age Blueprint and stored it in that big filing cabinet in your apartment in the Tower, Banshee will now happily CRAFT as many randomly rolled copies of any weapon you like, as long as you have the 'print, the necessary Glimmer and materials. These are materials which are naturally finite in your consumables inventory, but which can literally be found in every alley, every hallway, every cave, on every rooftop, dropping from every third-ish downed enemy and from every junk item you decide to dismantle, in random amounts. And while we're on the subject, if you think you've found all the materials sources out there in the world? Well, you haven't, because new ones are cropping up in weird and genuinely out-of-the-way locations with every reset. And one of those chests really DOES contain that jackpot of 5,000 of the same gizmos you've been burning through lately (because watching Banshee finally do Real Gunsmithing just happens to be your thing). Just remember that you're going to need that matching Key to unlock it when you find it. Eh... one caveat though - as Asher used to say: try not to DIE, because your Ghost is still recovering from the events that occurred during the Series Finale of D2. Among other things you'll discover as you go, this affects any planetary or crafting materials and other resources you may have on you when you're out there. If you haven't brought these things back to the Tower and put them in your Vault, or shipped them back using transmat and your ship's autopilot (aka Extraction - a tactic that presents its own seriously thorny set of risks and challenges), anything acquired since your last deposit will ALL now simply evaporate when you're resurrected by your Ghost. Yes, dying out there in the world now actually has a tangible downside. So... fair warning.
So... just more RNG then?
Of course you're wondering: Will the random roll on the crafted item you get, suck? Sure. Sometimes. And sometimes it'll be great. There's no longer any arbitrary weighting involved here, but The RNGenie must be appeased, after all. Life, even with Space Magic, is still frequently random. The important bit here is that the odds may not always be in your favor, but they are no longer stacked so heavily against you. You no longer have to sit through the Umbral Decryption of 42 False Promiseses waiting for that one Falling Guillotine to drop (so to speak), and hope that ONE CHANCE at a drop gave you a usable roll. Crafting gives players added control over the RPG / progression of their chosen character without the unbridled "joy" of making farming a real-life part-time job. And in the process this gives players new reasons to engage with the rest of the game's content. How so? Well, instead of playing an endless numbers game, doing the same thing over and over and over, hoping for the drop you're looking for, while you CAN still do that, you NOW also have the option to do a quest or side mission that ultimately gets you the Golden Age Blueprint you need or want (yes, you read that right - see below). Once procured, you add that 'print to your file, for the stuff needed to create the builds you're going to be using out in the world.
Enhancement
On top of that, whatever you get - whether it was crafted, looted from some chest, dropped by some boss, or gifted by a fellow fireteam member in a strike through the new sharing feature - can almost ALWAYS be made better... Don't like the intrinsic perk or all the stats that helmet rolled with? No problem. Pick one attribute. Any one. If you have saved a better stat or perk from some previous weapon, and registered it by donating that weapon at Holliday's Enhancement Bench, stop by to have a chat and she'll do the replacement for you. And even though Zavala has artificially hamstrung her ability in this regard, in that he only allows for ONE stat or perk to be replaced on any item (this could change - there's a Tower petition circulating...), it means that if your drop has everything but 'X' needed to make it perfect, once you eventually find 'X' on some other item of the same type, even though that's going to take time and effort on your part (in some cases... a LOT), you're all set - just go see Amanda. Weapons. Armor. Works the same. Want a MOD SLOT on that helmet instead of a top-level stat? Ask Holliday. Yes, Enhancement DOES have a Glimmer and Material cost, but she's got to pay the bills, right? And of course there are the Tower Taxes. And new sparrows aren't just transmatted by Fenchurch from some alternate reality, you know? The price is there to keep things reasonable, it's just not going to empty your consumables inventory unless you really want it to. Bottom Line: Destiny is a looter, yes, but it's ALSO a legitimate RPG now, and you have a new level of agency that allows you to CRAFT your own loot as well as hunt for it in the wild the way we have in the past, and you can enhance your stuff based on other items you may have found.
b-b-b-b-b-But muh GRIND!!!
What? Worried about getting that "god roll" without the endless grind you've come to depend upon, to fill in for actual quality content? Worried you'll get that Carrot before you've experienced sufficient pain from the Stick? Well I'm happy to tell you that's just your Is/Ought and Appeal to Tradition conditioning from previous games, screaming in your ear: "but... but that's the way it's ALWAYS been!!1!!" It's a trap! Nothing in the world HAS to be "X" simply because it's labeled "Y". Bruce Jenner taught us that centuries ago. If you're the addictive type who believes all video games must work like a slot machine in order to be "rewarding" - including the sort who thinks everyone else should be forced to play the way you do - hey, not to worry. You'll never be forced to craft a single item. Plus - BONUS! - RNG is still a significant factor; it's just no longer THE ONLY factor. That said, you're just going to have to accept the reality that other people value their limited time. Furthermore, you're not my real dad, so kindly stop telling me how I should be forced to -grind- play just because YOU have found a new dopamine trigger that puts you in your 'happy place'. Instead, be glad there's a slightly more deterministic OPTION in the hunt for better loot, because you're eventually going to need quality gear to succeed at the higher difficulty levels later. That artificial "power level" number floating on your inventory screen? Yeah, that's not going to help you any more.
On to mods...
Want a scope that increases crit damage or stability? A mag that increases fire rate, reload speed, or which ACTUALLY significantly increases the standard mag size (i.e., not by just three rounds)? Better accuracy or increased damage from a grip or muzzle attachment? How about a bump-stock that turns that awesome Scout into a thrall-thrashing AR? There are several to choose from in every one of these categories. Plus some that work directly with your preferred Class in various ways, like a suppressor that causes melee-affected enemies to explode/AOE. Find the blueprint, craft the mod and it's unlocked forevermore. Oh, and the price to apply a mod? 0 Glimmer - you already paid to create/unlock it. Wait, what? No annoying surcharge every time I switch scopes? No Masterworking bullshit? No. There was never anything "masterful" about Masterworking. Dumbest misuse of the term ever. No, your gear is fully customizable out of the box (so to speak). No more mindless grinding just to add a tiny extra bit of customization. Save the mindless grinding for what really matters (to you).
So how do I get these GA Blueprints for mods and other items?
Answer: you acquire these as random drops from various activities and also as Targeted Loot, e.g., side missions... Sorry, forgot to mention - in addition to the main campaign story missions, we have AN ARRAY of side missions now. We used to call these "Adventures", but there are a lot more of them now and they no longer just drop -two tokens and a blue- 500 Glimmer and a blue when you're done with them. Think of these, I guess, as The Adventures That Actually Matter Now - TATAMN. Like CTATODL but, different. Each side mission features a blueprint for a specific weapon, armor piece or mod. Want the +10 or +20 round mag? Simple. Go run that side mission, which is identified (if there is one - some of these are just random drops from P.E.s, Lost Sectors, etc.) on the new Blueprint File entry slot where the 'print will go, once acquired. Just remember... the side missions? Yeah, don't be misled - they're frequently as involved and difficult as the campaign story missions, since a lot of them are dedicated to actively experiencing the parts of the Destiny story that used to be buried in cryptic, incoherent walls of "lore" text that so many players actively ignored and/or didn't even know about. A bunch of these side missions actually even require finding and traversing the correct path through The NEW Infinite Forest (recently resurrected from the DCV, apparently) in order to get to the historic event depicted in that mission. I personally love the ones where you [re-enact various past luminaries' experiences during the Battles of Twilight Gap and - even though I'm a die-hard Hunter main - Six Fronts]. The use of D1's original music is amazing in those. You'll probably have your personal faves as well. Either way, knowing how a story ends may "feel" safe, just remember these are Vex Simulations of past events, and have the potential to end very differently from stories The Speaker used to tell to scare the children... Beyond this, in addition to their full, D1-sized gear and weapon inventories, which are made incrementally available to you by furthering their respective goals over time, the NM, DO and FWC faction leaders seem to have an endless supply of blueprint-rewarding bounties tied to RE-running the side mission simulations at various difficulty levels - some for mods, some weapons, etc. They're not cheap, though, and they only get a new one once a week. That said, every few weeks or so one of the factions will offer a highly sought-after blueprint in return for churning through a hefty set of tasks they need help with. This might require testing experimental weapons (some of which might just, eh, explode), trying new tactics using class skills, or collecting stuff like crates of Hive Thrall Claws (NO idea what Arach Jalaal does with these smelly things and, frankly, I don't WANT to know...). Details? You'll have to ask them - they keep that stuff pretty close to the vest and it's changing all the time. So far, however, all the ones I saw can be completed in PvE OR PvP, which is a nice change. Seriously, isn't this more fun and rewarding than a Collection that's really just a useless, static checklist? Same goes for mods on gear, BTW. And yes you can craft a new, randomly rolled instance of every single piece of armor in the game once you have the blueprint, as many as you have the materials for. Want yet another reason to go out and shoot stuff? No problem. Go hunt down more 'prints and collect more mats. Worried about so-called "power creep"? Don't be. Because the RPG customization on weapons and gear is so expansive now, it's no longer necessary for the various arms manufacturers to churn out endless series of 30 or 40 re-skinned, slightly different "archetypes" of the same basic weapon class. And new stuff that's introduced doesn't necessarily render its predecessors obsolete - it simply gives you alternate choices for getting the job done. Also, that new GH blueprint you just got from Hideo at the last Faction Rally? The one that bumps max crit damage up by an additional 5% over previous specs? Yeah, one of the required elements needed to build using that 'print is an existing GH. No more "sunsetting". Instead, you literally Trade Up. Or not. Your choice.
Ran out of stuff to do?
Ha, very funny. No, you didn't. Not only did we work our way up through FIVE levels of Open World Difficulty during the campaign getting our Guardian from lvl 1 to lvl 50, but once we reach "end game", we NOW have the ability to set our Open World Difficulty to one of FOUR different new difficulty settings - Normal, Hard, Challenging & Heroic - each of which has significant impact on the nature of the open world experience and the quality of loot that drops in that context. Every level of player from casual to hard core, kinderguardian to seasoned vet, now has a setting they can adjust to their taste. No more dumbing the ENTIRE game down to coddle the Lowest Common Denominator. Also, there's no longer Gigabytes of content taking up space on your hard drive that you can't access, because every single campaign mission is not only replayable, but has the same 4 difficulty options via a standalone selector, which changes up the nature of the mission itself as you graduate through the levels (i.e., no, we no longer just add a "Champion" that requires a special mod, and pretend that's a new version of the mission). Oh yeah, some missions also feature an added selectable level of difficulty: Legendary. Bored? Run a Legendary. Seriously. Still bored? Join up with a friend who's running in a Heroic level open world when you're used to doing Normal. It will wake you the eff up quick AND show you just how far you need to go in terms of enhancing your build and the quality of your gear. Conversely, grab a friend and help them get better gear.
Which Class?
You now have SIX to choose from (not just 3), each with a unique Super and an individually-tailored skill tree that's fully activated through XP and other means I didn't have time to investigate. Want to maximize effectiveness on ARs, Shotties and Sidearms? Reset your skill tree. Explosive damage? Ditto. Cost to reset? 10,000 Glimmer? 20,000? No. Zero. Could the skill trees be better? Absolutely. And they will be. Right now they're still inferior to what post-D1 should have been. But neither are they a dumbed-down collection of canned skill presets that look like they were designed for pre-schoolers and Mark Noseworthy (sorry Mark). As more nodes are added in the future, and "meaningful choices" must be made in selecting which ones to activate - including new ones that actually change the way your Super behaves - they will eventually grow to become the sort of skill trees worthy of your status as a bona fide God-Killer.
Enemy AI?
Yeah, uhm... fair warning again: this is not your Dad's Destiny. In addition to seriously messing with your Ghost's feature set, the events leading to the finale of D2 had some pretty remarkable effects on the system's locals, as well as the new hordes that have been appearing from who-knows-where. They will flank you. At every opportunity. They'll try to surround you, use focused fire, and use cover to their advantage. Getting overwhelmed and want to retreat? They will chase you down. If outnumbered, they might retreat to find others of their kind nearby. Also, squads of them will just randomly appear pretty much anywhere in the open world and sometimes even right in the middle of a Crucible match, transporting crates of heavy ammo. As difficulty level increases, the enemy A.I. will even anticipate your movements, heal themselves the same way you do and make use of some of the same high-tech gear you have. Also, every so often, elite "Dark Guardians" will come after you in pairs to steal your stuff, like a WWE Tag Team. No, they're not actual players despite how they behave. They're A.I. With functional "I". Ultimately, you'll be glad that ALL ammo reserves have been bumped up considerably, and that you no longer see reserve ammo quietly disappear when you switch, say, from one sniper to another sniper... because you're gonna need it.
Power-level grinding?
Please let all your former clanmates who are still off playing CP2077 know: the power-level grind is gone. New content as it appears might require a new build strategy, though, and possibly even stuff that you don't have (yet), because it's acquired as part of the most recent DLC campaign. So just keep that in mind. Power level? No longer a factor once you've completed the main campaign, because that's the only stretch where it was ever actually useful.
Cosmetics?
Covered. And you don't need to spend a (real) dime to get them (although you certainly can if you're so inclined - there's actually an entire mall filled with beautiful, useless junk you can spend real money on. Just remember: other players will see you using/wearing this stuff.). Want to apply a specific shader to all your gear at once? There's a button for that. All your weapons? A button for that too. Oh, and did I mention that shaders are unlockables, not consumables? You're welcome. 9-position emote wheel? Done. And it works as easily on PC as it does with a console D-Pad. Also, ghost shells and sparrows can benefit from Amanda's Enhancement Bench in the same ways as weapons and gear.
How about PvP?
Well, for one, you'll be excited to hear that PvP is no longer the reason we can't have nice things. There's "Quickplay" Crucible that randomly cycles through short stretches of SBMM and CBMM to create lobbies, so that the impact of one MM scheme never makes one pine for the other. Stomping or getting stomped? Just keep playing and things will change. Meanwhile, team composition has been normalized. No more solos playing 6 stacks, etc. Quickplay is where anything available in PvE is useable in PvP. Anything. No restrictions. No nerfs, buffs, tweaks or other "balance" nonsense. No more shrinking sniper rifle mag sizes in PvE because they're "O.P." in Crucible. It's basically a free-for-all. Like playing Mayhem? Well this is pretty close. Pretty much anything goes. Also, the maps are MUCH larger now. It no longer feels like every match is crammed into a swiss cheese, with a sliding shotgunner waiting around every corner. Have fun, but don't forget to play the objective, because even though this is Quickplay, and it's pretty casual, a loss also erases any progress you've made during that match on that bounty you're trying to complete. Sorry. The good news is that those completed bounties may take longer to finish, but they're a LOT more valuable now, especially since you can now consume a portion of your Valor rank to upgrade them. Then we have Competitive Crucible, which is primarily SBMM and if you want to rise through the competitive ranks, you make the commitment to keep playing and do just that. Did I mention... it's C-O-M-P-E-T-I-T-I-V-E. That is, it's NOT REQUIRED. Just like the OPTIONAL matchmaking that we finally have for every activity in the game, including raids, IT'S OPTIONAL. It's actual Competition. Like when you CHOSE to go out for the basketball team. Or didn't. Not necessarily for everyone. Also, participation in this mode is NOT REQUIRED. I'm told that the Competitive system only downshifts to CBMM if the concurrent player population there drops below a certain level. So as long as BUNGiE does their job and keeps the player population healthy, you'll usually be playing against Guardians at roughly your own level until your stats start to improve, at which point you're bumped up to the next tier and get to feel like a n00b again. There are seals. There are emblems. There are titles, shaders, sparrows, armor ornaments, ghost shells, emotes, ghost projections, finishers, ships and various other geegaws that can ONLY be acquired as awards from Competitive Crucible now, but no weapons, gear or other "ritual" or "pinnacle" rewards other than stuff that can drop anywhere else in the game. Got gud? That's just friggin' Awesome. You get bragging rights and various cosmetic accoutrements that show you're A PvP God with Real Skillz™... as opposed to someone with a clever build (thanks to above-average RNG), an exotic hand cannon from a raid, or that filthy grenade launcher that you acquired by running 400 playlist strikes other players didn't have the time to complete because they have real jobs and real kids.
Level Playing Field, Evolved
Happily, in D3 the servers are now genuinely dedicated and the weapons and gear in Competitive Crucible are curated, just like Halo's were. Curated by whom? By the Guardians who play it, 'natch - specifically those whose Glory Rank has lifted them to voting status, which gives them a vote on what specific weapons and gear will be made available in the next Competitive round, democratically. As far as weapons and gear go, when you enter the Competitive fray, you select from the same rack of lethal tools that everyone else in Competitive has access to for that match, as determined by the players who engage in it, based on the voting during the previous round of competition (typically lasting 6 weeks - the only vestige of "seasons" I could find in D3 and, interestingly, the ONLY context in which a "season" makes any sense). In D3, the difference between a competitive W or an L NOW comes down to one thing: your skill, not your RNG luck or the amount of free time you have to devote to farming that 'god roll' Uldren's Promise, skill. Finally, I understand that cheaters, paid carries, recoveries, etc., that are legitimately identified in Competitive by BUNGiE are permanently banned and publicly outed at bungie.net. No exceptions. Just like any IRL Competitive Sport. Now our competitive online gaming athletes can enjoy the same degree of accountability as their IRL counterparts. Nothing will ever completely eliminate determined cheaters but maybe, just maybe, these kinds of changes will finally put Destiny on the eSports map. Only time will tell.
Summing up...
There's so much more to discuss like the new raids and strikes, and the amazing artwork and music that has always been Destiny's hallmark... but the bottom line here is that it's simply unbelievable how much quality and depth was restored to this game once BUNGiE abandoned the "seasonal release" fad (that was aimed solely at steady revenue generation), moved to a streamlined, high-end, third-party, off-the-shelf game engine which they have apparently customized in a few key areas, and focused on creating a GOTY-quality product by returning to the large scale release model that made Halo and so many other games the iconic masterworks that we remember. I can't wait to email my former clanmates the news. p.s. oh, and that literal Army of Fucking Beavers? Yeah. Those guys have apparently been retired since we moved back to the original, reconstructed Tower. I didn't run into a single one of them. ----------------------------------------- Okay, back to reality... yes, of course, this was a somewhat whimsical description of where I'd love to see Destiny go - a satire of sorts. I've held onto it figuring it'll probably be DV'd into oblivion for various reasons but figured... what the heck. Lengthy? You bet. But it should be obvious why this isn't a soundbiteable topic. That said, this is obviously all "IMHO". Gaming is a subjective thing and everyone's going to have their own preference. There are PLENTY of other legitimate features that can be (and have been) implemented in a game like this. Except for the Crucible stuff (where I added my own SWAG take on how to improve it), almost every single one of the features and mechanics described above has ALREADY been implemented in a game that currently exists, and which has millions of players. The current version of that game - also a sequel - was developed over the course of about three years, by a company roughly the size of BUNGiE, with comparable resources, and which is ALSO working on other projects. If you've played it, you already know the game I've been using as a model here, which shows it's more than feasible. The last couple years have revealed (at least to me), that a GOTY-quality, open-world looteshooteMMORPG needs legitimate depth. Not "seasons" or season passes or any of the distractions, gimmicks and design restrictions that release model entails. That shit is fine for simple FPS/3PS shooters like Fortnite, Overwatch and PUBG. But paper-thin seasonal releases, repetitive power-level grinding, planned gear obsolescence, time-gated, drip-fed content ... these are the antithesis of the game Destiny was meant to be. NGL, it's been genuinely heartbreaking to watch the franchise regress from its peak in late 2016 / early 2017 to its present state. BUNGiE can do better.
No, Karen, I will not commit a felony because your kid wasn't allowed in.
posting on mobile, and it's a long one, TL;DR at bottom Backstory: For the past 7 months I have been working as a Slot Technician at my local Casino & Resort, and I have definitely seen my fair share of things. "Make it hit and I'll give you a tip"-esque people, tweakers on nickel machines who smell of stale cheetos and piss, y'know, the whole nine yards. I am also an ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome person, so I have had some bad things called to me at this establishment. So, about a month ago, a woman was stopped at the front door by a security guard because she was trying to bring in her, what seemed to be 12 or 13 year old, wheelchair-handicapped son into the casino floor (which here, like most places, is 21 years old or older to enter, no exceptions). I was overhearing the conversation with security and a Uniform security agent at the main entrance. (Key: EM - Entitled Mother, U - Uniform, SG - Security Guard) EM: "Why won't you let my son in? He's in a f---ing wheelchair" it's not like he'll be playing any of the games, he'll be right beside me. You could have a security guard be over me" (Bear in mind, Security is wearing thin because they are short staffed that day) U: "It's state law. We cannot allow him onto the gaming floor" EM: "But he's beside me! He's not physically able to hit any keys! I'm on vacation from (Location) and I want to play the slots! I don't have anyone else to give him to!" SG: "Sorry, Ma'am, no exceptions. We can escort you to the buffet and the entrance to the hotel, but that's it" EM: "So, escort me to a slot machine and give my son to someone to watch over him!" U: "There is nobody in the building that can do that." EM: "Come on! They let me do this in Vegas when he was 10!" U: "I'm sorry, you have to go." She left, extremely pissed off, and I was behind a short wall, laughing my ass off. But, this isn't where the story ends. About an hour later, she comes back without her son and got let in to play one of our newest games that our department installed. I'm not sure if it was common, but she got into her purse and taped a picture she just took of her son in the front entrance of our casino (I know it was today because of the clothes he was wearing and the fancy lighting in the doorway of the casino, and SG was confused as to why she was taking a picture of him after they got escorted out), and since there was a Staples near our casino, she might have got it printed out there. So, as with most casinos I'm aware about, our cash out system prints out tickets you can use in other machines, but you have to put the ticket face-side up into the machine otherwise it will jam and they will have to call a Floor Attendant (if it didn't have credits already on it) or a Slot Tech to fix it. Unfortunately, all of our floor attendants were all busy on jackpots with our supervisors, so Slot Techs had to take care of whatever comes to them. As I was passing by the section she was in, I noticed EM jammed the bill acceptor purposely by repeatedly putting the ticket in upside down, until the machine read, "CALL ATTENDANT" on it. And, since I was right there, I helped her. (ME - me, duh) Me: "What seems to be the problem?" EM: "The damn ticket wouldn't go in, I can't play this game" Me: "Don't you worry ma'am, I'll fix this up for you and you can keep playing" I then call the machine in to Surveillance so they don't get alarmed that I opened a machine EM: "Well, since you have it opened and it is broken, maybe you can give me free play for my troubles?" Me: "I apologize, ma'am, I'm just a Slot Technician, I don't have the power to do that. You could go to the Player's Club and talk to them if you'd like" EM: "Well, RUDE. Since you know the machines and currently opened up mine, can you fix it to hit a big jackpot? I need the money for my son" She then proceeds to point to the picture she taped on the machine. Me: "Ma'am, I do not have the authority to make it hit, and I certainly do not think it is possible (as it was pseudo-random as I was aware of)" EM: "But my son is wheelchair-ridden, and I need that money for medical expenses! Are you trying to stop me from doing that?" Me, Closing up the machine after handing her ticket back: "Nope, machines ready for you! Let me put a little fairy dust on it for good luck!" I then proceed to rub the machine with nonexistent fairy dust, in the hope of her getting lucky, as I do when I fix a machine up to give happiness to the patron EM, pointing to my keys: "Well, why don't you make yourself actually useful and use your fairy wand to grant me my wish?" Me: "As I have said, I have no power to do that." EM: "What are you, retarded? I'm only asking you to rig the machine to pay out for my sick f---ing son, are you mentally handicapped, boy? IT'S NOT COMING OUT OF YOUR F---ING PAYCHECK!" Let me tell you, I was bullied for being different all my life, and other than being called fat, I was also called retarded a lot, so it really hit too close to home. Me, trying not to burst out crying: "Unfortunately, I do not have any authority to do such a thing." I don't, in my state it is considered a felony. She yelled at me, berating me calling me spastic (which I later found out that is a highly offensive term for a handicapped person in Great Britain) and how I was too stupid to be doing a job like this, among other offensive terms. I called my supervisor about the ordeal, and while I was calling him, two of our city's policemen came to her and arrested her for child endangerment. She had apparently left her kid outside in 30°F weather in the car, and a security guard on parking lot patrol noticed him and asked a few questions. And, yes, her picture was sent to us from surveillance and now she's on a permaban list for our casino. Oh, and because of her, I had a panic attack in the Slot Tech office because of her berating me so harshly. Luckily, they gave me an extra 15 minute break to hopefully reset, but I'm ok now. Thank you for reading! TL;DR: Mom tries bringing her disabled kid in, gets denied, comes back with kid left in her car, berates me to fix the machine to hit a jackpot, and gets arrested. EDIT: Typo UPDATE: Thank you for Reddit Gold, it was my first time receiving it, thank you ❤ I actually just found out at work what happened to the kid and mother. Turns out the mother was attempting to sue our casino for endangering her child because we didn't let her in with him, also discrimination. I'm not sure what the sentencing was, but, a few security supervisors said it was some jail time and CPS was called (thanks everyone for asking!) Needless to say the case got thrown out.
Welcome to 2019 – we’re starting the year with a bang! MAME 0.206 is an absolutely huge update when it comes to new dumps and newly working software, especially when it comes to TV games. As far as we know, MAME is the first V.Smile emulator with working controls and the most compatible, with almost all dumped titles fully playable for one player (the second joystick isn’t working yet). A number of JAKKS Pacific games based on similar technology are also working in this release. And from Japan, you can now play the Popira and Dance Dance Revolution Family Mat rhythm games, as well as Super Dash Ball. The Namco Nostalgia and Taito Nostalgia games are now playable, too. Game & Watch coverage is steadily expanding, with Black Jack, Lifeboat, Manhole (new wide screen), and Rain Shower added in this release. Black Jack is particularly notable as it hasn’t seen re-issue or emulation before now. On the arcade side, San Francisco Rush 2049 and its Special Edition have been promoted to working, and we’ve added alternate versions and bootlegs of several supported games. Heihachi_73 has tested the Aristocrat Mk V slot machines, and dozens have been promoted to working. If you enjoy spinning the wheels, why not give some a try? If you’re aware of the effort to preserve original Apple II software in the new low-level WOZ disk image format, it should come as no surprise that MAME is on board. We’ve started documenting these dumps in a software list, and we’ll continue to add dumps as they become available. If you’re a fan of Acorn computers, you might want to try some of the newly supported BBC Micro ROM slot expansions, including banked ROM devices, RAM expansions, and real-time clocks. A few additional Electron expansion devices have been added, too. Of course, these are just selected highlights, and there are plenty more bug fixes and emulation improvements in this release. There are also some incremental improvements to MAME’s system and software selection menus. You can get the source and Windows binary packages from the download page.

No pornography whatsoever. No peeking. No touching. No masturbation. HARD MODE. For SIX MONTHS! Mindblowing. Absolutely incredible, thank GOD! Earlier this year, I was a complete PMO zombie. Struggling to escape pornography was an understatement. After falling from my highest ever streak of 58 days on hard mode; a streak which took me 12 years of trying to obtain, I was severely depressed. I threw out all the positive habits that led me to that streak and returned to binging on TV shows, movies, junk food and most of all, pornography. I was unemployed, overweight, unhappy with my life and it was an immense struggle to get a 14-day streak going again. Looking back on how much my life has changed since June is unbelievable. And I KNOW without a doubt that the same is possible for you too. I pray that this story resonates with you and helps you achieve success in your journey.
A Cautionary Tale
I was over the moon with joy after passing 90 days. I didn’t stop to think clearly about life after achieving that milestone. One dear friend and companion of mine had warned me not to get complacent and that he knew plenty of people who had relapsed at or around the 100-day mark. The book Power over Pornography had cautioned me as well. I didn’t know how real the danger was until I had to battle the strongest urges I’d ever faced on day 95 of my streak. That day I slipped — big TIME. At the time, I felt bad enough that I wanted to reset and start again. I wish I could take it back, but at the same time, it helped me learn much more about what it takes to stay free and clean, and just how much I didn’t want to return to Day Zero. I’ll walk you through what happened so you can learn from it and not repeat the same mistake. It started with me browsing online for a new book to read about pornography to understand the addiction better. I downloaded one and started reading it, but it sounded like it was in support of pornography, so I didn’t think it was safe to read. I deleted it. But now thoughts were in my mind - ‘Is it that bad? I didn’t see anything triggering, let me at least browse through it and see if it’s safe.’ I didn’t deal with those thoughts, and hours later, I redownloaded it. Huge mistake. The book was definitely in favour of pornography, and it had images of pornstars. I deleted it straight away after seeing the first picture, but now it was stuck in my head. I hadn’t seen anything for over three months, so it was majorly triggering. I went through my PC and checked to see if I had any other unsafe books, and I did, which I promptly deleted. I felt good about not going any further and turning things around. But I neglected the tasks I had set for the day and instead proceeded to browse 9GAG looking for funny memes to take my mind away from the triggers. I laughed a few times and started getting into a good mood again, but then I found myself hovering over NSFW memes, debating whether to click on them. I decided to close the page and go to YouTube. ‘YouTube’s safe, right?’ I went there and browsed for NNN meme clips. One of the recommended videos was about catching golddiggers - the YouTuber pretends to be poor or unattractive and tries to ask out a girl, and when she says no, he returns in a Lambo and calls her a golddigger when she agrees the second time. The thumbnail had a beautiful girl. I clicked on it, watched it, then watched a few more. The new recommendation, kissing prank videos - the YouTuber plays pranks on girls to get them to kiss him, like asking them a trick question or rigging a magic trick. I hesitated again. In the pornographic videos I used to watch, the kissing scenes were the most ‘pleasurable’ to me, I was trying to meet my need for love and affection through them. Still, I clicked on it and watched it. Sure as clockwork, those feelings of massive arousal started bubbling up again. I could feel my body preparing for a furious masturbation session and a quick release as we had done in the past. I closed YouTube; no way I was going to let that happen. I asked myself, ‘How was I getting this worked up without even watching pornography?’ I’d watched similar YouTube videos dozens of times in the past without even a tingle. No more YouTube. I said, let me watch a movie on Netflix and calm down. But the movie I chose was one that I’d already identified would have triggering scenes to me, and I’d discussed it with my accountability partner previously. I got 10 minutes in, before I’d seen anything, and remembered ‘I was supposed to notify my AP before watching this!’ That’s when everything I’d done throughout the day came flooding back to me. I would have to report the slip to him. Was I going to report a slip or a full-blown relapse? That’s when I logged into the forum again. I started reading through my old posts where I’d been advising others. Why wasn’t I following my advice? I re-read my 90-day success story. No way I was going to come back 5 days later and report a relapse. ‘I can’t write this again! This is a once-in-a-lifetime story!’ No more backsliding. A slip IS a relapse from now on. A counter reset, climbing back from Day Zero again, and facing all the negative consequences which that entails. No more slips, GOD willing. I lay on my bed, battling urges until 7 AM before finally falling asleep, reading posts on the forum, but I didn’t slip any further. I still wasn’t following my advice - I was battling the urges instead of mindfully dealing with them directly - but I hadn’t gone back to pornography or touched myself at all. As we advance in our streaks, we become more sensitive. It’s even more important to protect ourselves from triggers and stay away from lies like ‘just a peek won’t hurt’ and ‘I’ve come this far so I can look at X or XX now as long as it’s not XXX.’ We must stick to the strategy that helped us get to where we are, and add even more commitment because now we have something to lose. As my AP told me, commitment fades over time. We have to refuel it with new activities and habits and keep the journey exciting, so we don’t become complacent and under threat.
The Importance of Accountability and Community
Without an accountability partner, it’s unlikely I would be here sharing this story with you. Remembering that I’d have to report back to him helped me return to my senses. It’s one extra thought in the back of my mind now; ‘If I do this, would I have to report a slip?’ Knowing that I’d have to report all slips is a barrier against acting out. I’m very grateful for my AP. The two of us share our plans, strategise, advise and support each other on the journey. Every week we check-in and discuss how our plans are working. I can trust him and open up about things I’m struggling with and share honestly without fear of judgement or shame. I felt alone for many years; it’s great to have someone doing this with me who’s just as passionate about leaving pornography in the dust for good. And that’s key - having an AP with a similar attitude. Knowing that we don’t take this lightly at all. There is no ‘relapses are part of the journey bro, chin up mate.’ If there’s a slip, the investigation follows. ‘Why did you slip, man?’ ‘What will you do about it? What tools have you put in place to prevent it from happening again? Ah, I see you’ve already added those keywords to your site blocker. Great stuff, let’s review in a week.’ You don’t need a hug after a relapse; you need guidance on how to prevent it from happening again - a relapse means there’s a hole in your plan that needs to be repaired. It isn’t friendly to be more concerned about boosting your mood than your recovery - guess what; your mood will be permanently moved up a few notches once you’re no longer binging on pornography every month. I now have accountability software on my devices as per his suggestion, and we keep track of anything that looks questionable or suggests someone is moving towards a slip. I haven’t had anything like this before in my journey to recovery. I’d become an expert at clearing my tracks and hiding away, and there was no site blocker I couldn’t find a way around. But this brings everything into the light. It’s powerful to have that thought before doing any search, ‘How will this look? What will my AP say if he sees I’ve searched for this?’ And outside of my relationship with my AP, I’ve increased my accountability even further. After passing 60 days, I placed a physical counter in the living room of our family home, and told my mother I’d passed my highest streak, and had no intention of going back. It’s a marble jar that I add to with every day free and clean. If it ever goes to zero due to a relapse, I have to show her what I watched. Absolutely no way I’m watching pornography. I would never live through the shame of my beloved mother seeing the filth I used to watch. No way no sir, I’ll continue my streak, thank you very much. That helped keep me from turning that slip on day 95 into a binge session. I’ve shared with most of my close friends about my struggles with this addiction. Two of them have joined me in escaping pornography also, and one checks in with me regularly. There is so much love, support, advice and encouragement I get from this community. You people have given me new hope in humanity. Being motivated by your brothers, seeing them pass their highest streaks, reading their success stories and learning from them, there is so much healing power in that. When the entire world looks at us as ridiculous for quitting something they’re all engaged in doing when they’re all telling us that there’s nothing wrong with pornography and masturbation is completely healthy - “4-5 times a day? Great bro, you won’t get prostate cancer!” - This community drowns out the noise and reminds us that we’re not alone on this journey. We need connection. This addiction thrives in isolation. Unlike smoking or drinking or drugs which people tend to do in groups, we hide away in our rooms, drowning in negative emotions and continually relapsing. Life changed for me after I started participating in the community in November 2018. And when I left for five months after relapsing, I couldn’t make it to 3 weeks again without that connection. Connect as much as your time permits, share your story and listen to others. Learn from others’ advice, and give some out yourself. You don’t go to war alone unless you’re the Hulk, and even he teamed up with the Avengers.
How Bad Do You Want It?
I say it all the time to people; this is the world’s toughest addiction to escape. What makes it so difficult isn’t the cravings to return or the withdrawal symptoms. Compared to an addiction to strong drugs, our painful experiences are mild. But this addiction is tied to the highest natural source of motivation on Earth - the sexual drive. People will forego the need to eat if the chance for a favourable sexual encounter comes their way. And there’s a significant portion of us (myself included) whose only sexual experiences have been with pixels on a screen. Moreover, our prefrontal cortices have been shot to pieces due to years of addiction. Self-control is low. And if that wasn’t enough, no addictive substance is this easy to obtain. It’s incredibly easy to relapse. Pornography is everywhere. We come across it when we’re not even looking for it - that’s how many of us became addicted in the first place. We don’t have to pay any money to get it; we don’t have to meet someone in a shady alleyway, we don’t even have to leave our houses. And it’s always available. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. No days off. Pornography offers endless variety; it never rejects us; it never says no, it’s never not in the mood tonight or too tired or too sick or angry with us. On one infamous website, there are enough videos that it would take over 10,000 years to watch each one. Where our ancestors would travel to distant lands, invent new technology and theorise about the world they lived in, we hunch over our devices in the endless and unsatisfying hunt for the perfect video. To escape from this addiction, we have to be fully committed to growth and change. Determination is NECESSARY. We have to resolve that nothing in this life will ever make a relapse worthwhile. There is no negative emotion I can experience, no mood low enough that will make me relapse. No life circumstance is dark enough to make me self-harm like that again. Any reason is an excuse, and I’d only be lying to myself. Pornography never helped me anyway - I felt good for a few seconds, then felt horrible afterwards. The pain I was experiencing in life was still there. The need for love, comfort, security, affection, and so on hadn’t been met. And now, I had the added pain of relapsing on top - the guilt, shame and regret at breaking my streak once again, living against my values, throwing my promises and commitments in the garbage. There is no situation where sober you wouldn’t be better able to handle it than addicted you. We all experience pain and suffering in this life, and that won’t go away once you’ve rebooted. But you will be stronger and better prepared to face your problems. You’ll bounce back faster, and your mood regulates quicker. Your mental focus, memory and problem-solving skills are improved. You’ll think, “If I’ve conquered pornography after so many failures, I can conquer this too.” We have to make it harder to relapse. It’s far too easy. Let me give you an analogy. I work as a security officer. If you give people enough freedom, people will steal from your store. They’ll rationalise it away to themselves, “Well, I didn’t steal something like a TV set, it’s just a few drinks.” Some people will think twice when they see the CCTV camera or a security guard watching them. Others will stop when they see one guard at the door and another two walking up and down the aisles. Then some won’t be stopped unless there are plenty of security cameras that feed to a visible display in the store, two guards at every entrance, multiple guards walking up and down the store. Some will still steal with all of that, but it’s so difficult at that level that they must really want to shoplift that particular store. Since we don’t want to relapse, let’s increase the difficulty in getting back to pornography. One excellent blocker may be enough for some people, but it definitely wouldn’t work for me. But if there are five blockers set up, each with different passwords like D34rGOD1w0ntr3l4p53 and P0RNRU1N3DMYL1F3 which have to be typed out each time, it gets frustrating, and we’d start to remember that we really don’t want to go back there. Adding accountability software to the mix, some severe consequences if we relapse and remembering that we’ll have to confess what we did afterwards really changes the game. Be willing to change your lifestyle. We’ve all heard the quote, ‘Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.’ It’s a cliché because it’s true. If what we were doing was enough, we’d all have years of recovery on our counters. If we have to break the silence on this and share with someone in our lives, let’s do it. If we have to read dozens of success stories, learn from the strategies shared and make a plan of our own, let’s get to work. If we have to read a book or two to learn about the addiction, let me find time in my week to get it done. I used to spend 6 hours edging, so I can certainly spend 8 hours to read a book that will significantly improve my life. Think about cutting things off, even if only temporarily. After my slip with YouTube, I discussed it with my AP and realised that 80% of my relapses started on YouTube. I would browse for increasingly more sexual content until my streak felt dirty and I’d finish off the job by returning to a hardcore site. On his advice, I blocked YouTube. We can’t underestimate the pain of giving up some part of our technological lives. Our devices have become a part of us. Since 2009, I had been visiting YouTube for at least 2 hours every day, up to 12 hours on lazy days. It was where I got my entertainment, my education, my news, and it was also where I tended to begin my downward spiral back into pornography. As much as I loved it, it was unsafe for me. I went 70 days without using YouTube - I returned on day 165 after clearing it with my AP and making sure the accountability software monitored all searches. We have to be willing to give things up so we can progress - our favourite apps, unrestricted Internet access… We may even need to transition to a less powerful phone, lock away our tablets and have someone else lock and unlock our computers. The freedom on the other side far outweighs the short-term pain of these restrictions. Above all else, we have to remind ourselves why we started this journey regularly. We become forgetful over time. We don’t remember the pain of the last relapse; we forget how unsatisfying the previous time was or that moment of clarity we had when we decided enough was enough and we weren’t going back ever again. It’s impossible to make choices for ourselves in the future; we can only make choices in the present moment. Choosing to remind ourselves of strong reasons daily, remembering the pain of the last relapse and the genuine pleasure we’re heading towards as we escape the addiction is critical.
Make a Plan!
Imagine that you’re taking a cross country walk from Mumbai to New Delhi to raise money for a cause you’re deeply passionate about. However, you don’t take any GPS with you, no map, no food or water, no money, no travel guide, nothing but the clothes on your back and the shoes on your feet. You refuse to look at road signs or ask anyone for directions. When someone asks you how you plan to get to New Delhi, you ignore the fact that the cities are more than 1300km (800 miles) apart, and say, “It’s in India, I’m sure I’ll find my way.” This is the attitude so many of us in this community have when we don’t have a plan on how we’re going to escape this addiction. I had the same attitude for many years, and it didn’t serve me at all. Can we break free without one? Sure, but the chances are so slim, and the journey is so painful - why would we want to put ourselves through that? Why take chances on odds of 1 out of 10 000 when there are proven ways to overcome this? Breaking free isn’t about luck. You don’t just pull the lever on a slot machine and JACKPOT! You’ve won a 90 Day Streak! Congratulations on your reboot! It’s all about how well your plan works. A relapse isn’t a reflection of your willpower. If you’ve gone a full 24 hour day without touching yourself or watching pornography - things that you have constant access to - and passed the strong urges and the desire to return to binging on day zero, you have all the willpower you need to escape. You have what it takes. You are stronger than every urge you’ve ever had. The problem is your plan (or lack of one) doesn’t help you make the best use of your strength so you can succeed. Write it down, type it out, but it has to be written up. It can’t be floating around in your head, or you’ll forget it when danger returns. A goal not written is merely a wish; a goal without a plan is just a dream. Just a 2-3 page document could save your life from this struggle. Do the work. What goes into your plan? First of all, so many people don’t even have a method to overcome urges when they come; they’re just ignoring them and hoping for the best. Urges can come to you on day 1, and they can come to you on day 1501. They’re not going anywhere. They may decrease in intensity and frequency over time, but as long as you’re alive, you’ll face that temptation. The temptation to go back is not the problem at all; it’s our response that matters. Most of us have said at some point that we’re so angry we could kill someone. But we haven’t done it since we’re not murderers. That thought doesn’t hold any power over us, and we don’t respond to it by following through. In the same way, urges to return to pornography are only thoughts, and they only have the power we give to them. Our conscious mind can only focus on one thought at a time. With a method we follow every single time we get an urge, we maintain our power and eliminate those thoughts before they lead us back to a relapse. If we focus on something else, every single time, the triggering thought MUST go away. There are plenty of methods which work - mindfulness, direct confrontation, cognitive behavioural techniques, journaling your thoughts, yelling ten times I AM STRONGER THAN MY URGES. Find out what other people are doing and pick the method you like, then be sure to carry it out every single time you get urges, without fail. I didn’t do this on day 95 and nearly paid a very dear price for it. Don’t make the same mistake. No matter how weak the urge is, eliminate it. One piece of advice is to get a method that you can carry out anywhere you get an urge and at any time, like in the shower or when you’re in bed. Journaling is a brilliant method and effectively destroys temptations to relapse until you get the urge to masturbate while you’re in the shower. Think of something you could do in an emergency that would make the urge go away for the time being. If you jumped out of bed and into a cold shower or called a close friend, would you still be suffering from a strong urge? I heard recently on the Porn Free Radio podcast that there are two essential needs which we try to meet through pornography; the need for self-care, and the need for excitement. Wise man, with 3000+ days on his counter to back him up. Even though it’s a terrible way of trying to meet our needs, we’ve been doing it so long and so habitually that whenever we need to feel relief from stress, anxiety or discomfort of any sort, that’s where we go. Can’t sleep? Porn. Bad day at work? Porn. Failed an exam? Porn. For some of us, it’s gotten to the stage where we don’t even need to be feeling bad. We may look to it as a CELEBRATION, something to enjoy after a happy accomplishment. Sure, it offers endless variety; however, we’re never left satisfied even after hours of acting out. It always falls short and leaves a terrible aftertaste. We have to become aware of our triggers and have solutions for each one so that we aren’t left defenceless next time life gives us a kick in the teeth. Think of all the excuses for relapsing in the past and come up with effective counters for each one. Have some positive activities you will engage in instead of returning to pornography. Remember, pornography is no longer an option for helping us meet our needs. It was very inefficient anyway. Just having a few playlists of songs you enjoy can help you get into the right frame of mind much better than pornography ever could. Get one for when you’re feeling stressed that will relieve the tension. Have one that will make you want to dance - hard to feel angry when you’re tapping your feet to the beat. Have an upbeat one that will encourage you that the pain won’t last forever. Go for a walk. Watch your favourite movie. Pray. Journal about your thoughts. Call a loved one. Chat to someone in the community. All of these things will leave a good memory behind and help you feel better. Pornography always leaves a painful memory of relapsing and makes you feel worse afterwards, and that wasn’t your aim. Figure out what tools you’ll have in place to protect you from a relapse. Write your strong reasons for escaping the addiction. Choose what pornography filters and blockers you’ll have in place. Set up your accountability software and who you will share the reports with. Decide what apps and ‘safe sites’ like YouTube or Instagram you will block and for how long. Have a trusted friend or companion who you will share your plan with and review it regularly. Without sharing the plan with someone else, it’s a lovely document, but it won’t be helpful. If we could trust ourselves to keep our word, we would have been free a long time ago. It’s having someone else with us on the journey which keeps us accountable to our plan, which leads to progress.
Transform Your Life
Just because we say NoPMO doesn’t mean that’s all this journey is about. This is a journey for self-improvement and growth. Our lives are in urgent need of repair, and we have to start putting in the work now to change them. We can’t wait until we’ve rebooted to begin doing the work. Forgive yourself for all the pain and damage that addicted you caused in your life. Let go of the guilt, shame and regret. Let go of the past. There’s nothing we can do to change it, but the future is still available and untainted. Resolve to be a new person, a hero. This is your life! You’re the star of the movie, stop living like an extra with no lines. Think of the person you want to become in the future and start living like him now! Don’t wait another day! Set some goals for yourself which you’ll work on during your streak with a deadline of 90 days. Make them challenging, meaningful and exciting. When you add 90 days to your counter, you’ll feel the benefits when you’ve also added change and structure to your life. You’ve just left pornography behind, so you have much more free time now! There’s so much you can do with all that time you used to spend thinking about pornography, slowly edging towards pornography, watching it and acting out etc. Just one hour a day of reading in your chosen field will make you an international expert in 7 years. That’s 2500+ hours! Think seriously about your life and where you want to be a year from now. Five years from now. Write it down. Think also about how painful and miserable your life would be if you’re still stuck in this addiction a year from now. Five years would be a nightmare. Write that down too. Start making a plan for your life. It doesn’t have to be perfect, and you don’t need to have all the details, but you do need to get some direction and concrete structure. You only have one life; it’s an urgent priority that you figure out how you want to live it. Break down every area of your life and figure out ways you can improve in each area. Start taking steps to get better and upgrade your life. Make the smallest possible positive step, and grow from that each day; don’t overwhelm yourself by thinking you need to change everything in two weeks. The change has to be sustainable and consistent; you don’t want to burn out. Get excited about your life again! You’ll face difficulty and challenges along the way - I know I sure have - but you’ll reach a point where ticking items off your to-do list and checking them off on your calendar gives you more pleasure than a 4-hour edging session ever could. Pursuing your purpose in life is far more enjoyable than pornography ever was.
Personal Victories
There’s a whole bunch of fun and exciting things that have happened, thank GOD. The benefits I’ve experienced after rebooting have only increased. I’ll share the main ones within the last three months:
I transitioned into a better job - with an 8% raise, lower stress and more fulfilment. I can shape my day around it better and accomplish more towards my future.
I had the energy and mental strength to run more than 15km! (9 miles) I’ve never run that far in my life! This time last year, I could barely run 400m without stopping.
I’ve experienced a deeper connection with my loved ones and the damage I caused our relationships as an addict is being repaired more and more each day.
I discovered my life’s mission, part of which is giving this addiction a serious fight. I want to help myself and others break free of this for good and make a real difference. Alexander Rhodes is an inspiration. I made a plan to get back into education so I can learn the skills I need for my contribution to this fight.
I started recording videos about this NoPMO journey and set up a YouTube channel with more than 30 videos.
Resources and Books:
The Porn Free Radio Podcast - Has to be the best advice I’ve seen so far on how to gain real recovery from this addiction. The host, Matt Dobschuetz, has over 3000+ days porn-free, and his 200+ podcast episodes are a wealth of knowledge, advice and support. If you follow his advice, you’ll break out of the cycle of constant relapses and finally see changes in your life. HackBook - EasyPeasyWay - This book completely shattered my previous views about pornography. I highly recommend this book to everyone fighting to escape this addiction. It’s less than 150 pages and can transform your life forever. Power over Pornography: The Proven Solution to Overcoming Pornography Addiction by Brian Brandenburg - The author promises that if you follow the strategy laid out in the book, you will not relapse. Massive promise to make, but I agree. The one day that I neglected to follow the strategy was when I had a slip. It works. Your Brain on Porn: Internet Pornography and the Emerging Science of Addiction by Gary Wilson - The book ought to be required reading for anyone on this journey. So powerful to read stories of people reversing severe damage in their lives after a year free and clean. To know that the brain is changeable and to understand all the withdrawal symptoms. Like the flatline and why cravings are so bad in the initial stages and the cycle of shame-binge-shame-binge-shame etc. And to read the methods people used when the urge struck them, from the ‘Why didn’t I think of that?!’ to the ‘Man, that’s bizarre but glad it worked for him…’ Read it when you get the chance if you haven’t already. Gamechanger. Cupid’s Poisoned Arrow by Marnia Robinson - It explains so much about the neurochemistry of sexual addiction and the harmful effects of orgasm on the body, and advocates for an updated understanding of human sexual relationships. GoldJacketLuke on YouTube was able to pass 250 days and beyond merely by reading it and understanding its concepts. Why You Should Never Masturbate by David Baldwin - At the very least, you have some doubt about the prevalent theories of healthy masturbation. It will make you start to wonder if there is something to this semen retention thing people mention. You’ll wish someone handed it to you before your first PMO session. A compelling and thought-provoking book. The Porn Trap: The Essential Guide to Overcoming Problems caused by Pornography by Wendy and Larry Maltz. A very insightful book written by therapists who help clients every day with this addiction.
Conclusion
We’re all capable of breaking free; it entirely depends on how badly we want it and how far we’re willing to go to change. I pray that my story helps you. If you’re struggling, let me tell you, there is HOPE! Life is beautiful without pornography; you won’t miss it. I sure don’t. Take action now. Start today; don’t put it off for tomorrow. At the very least, download the plan template and schedule a time when you’ll start filling it out. If you’ve read this far, you’re serious about your recovery. I already know that you can do it, but it’s you who needs convincing. You have to prove it to yourself! Very grateful to my AP, close family, friends and companions for their love and support. I would have relapsed long ago without them. We can all do this, brothers! All praise is due to GOD, Lord of the Universe.
